The guitarron or "fat guitar" is a uniquely Mariachi instrument. The very large rounded back allows for sufficient volume to complete with trumpet and violin, the strumming of the other instruments and a chorus of human voices. The deep resonate bass notes that it produces in harmony with its smaller baritone brothers the vihuela and guitar, together with the all important human voices, elevate the mariachi made up of the other violins and trumpets to the status of "small orchestra," Also, the contrast of intervals, the very low to the very high is very pleasing to the human ear and gives the mariachi with it's pinnacle of instruments, the human voice, a complete and now famous "sound."
